Save Energy This Summer with These Quick Tips

Texans, it’s hot out there! Summertime means high temps and even higher electric bills. Are you doing everything you can to save energy? Here’s a few summer energy saving tips to help save you money during the hottest months of the year.

Tip #1: Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms

A ceiling fan is nice to have, especially during the summer. However, when you leave the room, it’s best to turn it off. Ceiling fans create a wind chill effect to keep people cool, but do very little to cool a room. Make sure your ceiling fan blades are rotating in a counterclockwise direction to create a cool downward airflow.

Tip #2: Heat up the outdoor grill, not your house

It’s best not to use an indoor oven during a hot summer day. Instead, try using an outdoor grill or even a microwave oven to cook food. A microwave uses two-thirds less energy then a stove. Plus, everyone can appreciate an outdoor cookout!

Tip #3: Limit the laundry

During the summer you want to use your washing machine and dryer as little as possible as they use a tremendous amount of energy. Only wash full loads of laundry and use cold water with an high efficiency detergent. Hang clothes to dry instead of using the dryer and avoid peak usage hours 4:00-6:00 pm. Make sure to clean the lint trap after every use.

Tip #4: Do dishes differently

To conserve energy, only use the dishwasher when you have a full load. Make sure to turn off the drying cycle and instead air dry the dishes or use a towel. Look for the Energy Star label when buying new appliances. An Energy Star certified appliance reduces your utility bill, conserves water and, in some cases, can earn you a federal rebate.

Tip #5: Eliminate your Energy Suckers

Making small adjustments around your home can help you save energy. Try a quick DIY audit to save on energy! Check the seals on all windows and doors. A leak can be costly. Change the air filters monthly. A dirty filter means your air conditioner works harder.

Hang curtains and draw them shut. A darker room is a cooler room. Make use of natural light when you can. The smallest changes can be the biggest money savers in the summer months.
