Signing Up with Payless Power: Q&A’s
- How long does it take to get the power on after you prepay?
If your home has a standard smart meter, a new service will usually be connected within an hour. However, there may be delays if the meter cannot be activated remotely or if a permit is required by your city.
If your order is not submitted before 4:00 PM, your lights won’t be on until the next business day.
- What kind of identification do I need to sign up with Payless?
You only need an email address and working phone number to sign up for prepaid electricity. Since Payless Power doesn’t require a credit check, a social security number or driver’s license is not necessary for the application process.

- Can you get pre-paid electricity with a switch hold?
You cannot change to Payless Power if there is a switch hold on your account.
A switch-hold is a block placed on your meter by your current electric company due to either a deferred payment plan or tampering charges. All outstanding fees must be paid in full to remove a switch-hold.
Payless Power will submit the request to remove the switch-hold once all of the required documentation is received and approved.
- What happens if my account balance drops below zero?
If your balance falls below one cent, Payless Power requires that the negative balance be paid in full before reinstating service. It is important to track usage on Payless Power’s online portal or via the phone to avoid default in payment and disconnection.
- Is there a reconnection fee?
While Payless Power hopes you never experience a service interruption, we require you pay the negative balance any past due. Once your account balance is brought back to at least $35.00, service will usually be restored within 2 hours the same business day.
- Do I have to sign a contract with Payless Power?
